It feels so nice on the skin,’ and ‘I use Pears at age 46… better
than Clinique! It’s been a game changer for me.’ A quick search shows literally hundreds of influencers think the same,
with people labelling it ‘the secret ingredient to glowing
skin’ and ‘the best facial cleanser around’.

You’re probably thinking this is just Gen Z-ers being hyperbolic again –
but it turns out, there is some method to the madness.
The soap contains lots of glycerin, the same ingredient you’ll find in Dermalogica, La Roche Posay and even Medik8 products.

Glycerin is uber-hydrating and aids plumpness, glow and skin elasticity, while the natural oils in Pears can help sooth, calm and soften your face, particularly when it
becomes dry in cold weather.  

One thing skincare experts seem to agree on is Pears isn’t going to do your skin any harm.
In fact, in an environment where lots of us overmedicate our faces, stripping it back to basics can really improve your complexion.

It’s worth keeping in mind, however, that Pears soap isn’t medical grade, so if you have any specific
skin concerns like dark spots, it’s not going to fix those.
But as far as we’re concerned at 70p, it’s worth adding to our beauty arsenal even if it’s just to remove stubborn make-up.

Anthony Albanese has tried to claim his relationship with Alan Joyce was a strictly professional one between a Prime Minister and a corporate titan, as he battles claims the Qantas
boss was his ‘personal travel agent’ for free flights and upgrades.

However that characterization of the relationship was at
odds with that made by Mr Joyce, who said he was ‘good mates’ with Mr Albanese and had been ‘for years’.

In the wake of the explosive claims that the Prime Minister had Mr
Joyce arrange free tickets and upgrades, Mr Albanese distanced
himself from the Qantas chief.

When asked about about their relationship on Sunday Mr Albanese
implied it was purely in a professional capacity,
having been Transport Minister and shadow transport spokesperson before becoming Prime
Minister. 

‘He (Joyce) was the CEO of the national airline …
I had the same relationship with him that
I have with John Borghetti as the CEO of Virgin,’ Mr
Albanese said.

That assessment was at odds with the many photos showing Mr Albanese and Mr Joyce apparently greatly enjoying each other’s company. 

Mr Albanese and Mr Joyce were pictured in high spirits on the red carpet at the Qantas 100th Gala
Dinner in March last year.

In photos from the event, Mr Joyce proudly walks the red carpet
with one arm around the prime minister and the other around Mr Albanese’s partner,
Jodie Haydon.

Just five months later, in August, a smiling Mr Albanese attended Qantas’s unveiling of it’s special
‘Yes 23′ emblazoned airplanes for the Voice referendum.

been ‘friends for years’ with Mr Albanese.

Asked about why he gifted Mr Albanese’s son Nathan a membership to the prestigious and exclusive Chairman’s Lounge Mr Joyce refused
to confirm or deny but talked up his relationship with the Prime Minister.

‘I’ve been good mates with Albo for some time,’ Mr Joyce said. 

However, the then Qantas CEO refused to say whether he lobbied the Prime Minister on the controversial decision to
lock competitor Qatar Airways out of domestic routes.

It has since emerged in a new book about Qantas, The Chairman’s Lounge,
by former Australian Financial Review columnist Joe Aston that Ms Haydon is also a Chairman’s Lounge member.

Anthony Albanese fires up and launches a brutal personal attack on book author

Reports have emerged in a new book Mr Albanese received 22 upgrades from economy
from Qantas and he would liaise personally with the former airline boss for them. 

Aston also alleged Mr Albanese directly contacted Mr Joyce while in his various parliamentary jobs to ask for special
upgrades for himself or his family.

According to unnamed Qantas ‘insiders’ 11 of the 22 flights Mr Albanese received upgrades
for were ‘privately funded’ and included overseas trips to Rome, London, Los Angeles and Honolulu, with some being
for holidays.

Mr Albanese insisted on Tuesday that the London flights was for work purposes and all were ‘declared in the appropriate way’.    

Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has leapt on the accusations describing Mr Albanese as being the ‘best
friend’ of Mr Joyce. 

Mr Dutton told Sky News on Monday night it was ‘strange’ Mr Albanese had directly contacted
Mr Joyce to request upgrades while holding a regulatory
position in the transport sector.

‘If you’re the Transport Minister and you’re picking up the phone to one of
the most important stakeholders in the portfolio asking for a free upgrade, then again,
I think the Prime Minister would be able to answer those questions more effectively than anyone else because I’m not
aware of anyone else having done it,’ Mr Dutton said.

It has since emerged that Ms Haydon also has membership of the Qantas Chairman’s Lounge

The Prime Minister denied frequently asking Mr Joyce for upgrades on Tuesday at press conference in the NSW
city of Newcastle.

‘The only discussions that I can recall with Alan Joyce certainly were not discussed through calls – we discussed the first flight from Australia to
Dubai on the A380,’ he said.

‘I’ve declared everything in accordance with all of the
rules.’

Aston was asked on Monday night by ABC interviewer Sarah Ferguson about how confident he was
that Mr Albanese had made calls personally to Mr Joyce for upgrades.

‘I am very comfortable with my sourcing,’ Aston said.

Asked whether he thought Mr Albanese had been influenced by Mr Joyce’s lobbying to block UAE airline Qatar domestically Aston said
it was ‘implausible’ to think that the Prime Minister’s office had nothing to do
with the decision.

‘It’s very hard to imagine a decision of any political sensitivity in the Albanese government that would not go through the Prime Minister’s

He noted the opening up of the Australian domestic market Qatar had seemingly been sailing through with Transport Minister
Catherine King speaking warmly about the proposal until ‘everything changed’
to stop it dead in tracks. 

 Ms King repeatedly denied in parliament the decision to block Qatar was due to Qantas lobbying her or any Labor colleagues.

Despite Mr Albanese claiming he declared every upgrade received from Qantas the Australian Financial Review reported
on Tuesday that he failed to do for his former wife Carmel Tebbutt when the two traveled together.

‘This is all a question of integrity. Most Australians struggle to afford even an economy
airfare. They’d never be able to afford the luxury of business class.
It’s out of our reach,’ she said.

‘Can Albanese truly be impartial when it comes to
making decisions about Qantas when he’s been getting tens of thousands of dollars worth of free
upgrades to business class? The revelations puts the decision he
made as transport minister and prime minister under a cloud.

‘Aside from the integrity issues, this revelation is also politically lethal.
Albanese took care to curate a self-image of a
housing commission boy who made it. But now the perception is cementing of a long-term pollie enjoying the perks of public office.’

Another awkward paradox of Mr Albanese’s  apparent close relationship with Mr Joyce is that the Labor leader in a trade unionist advocate while Qantas attempted to break the power of the Transport Workers Union by sacking 1700 staff
during Covid. 

The sacking has since been ruled illegal by Federal Court in a case brought by the
union with Qantas facing possible hundreds of thousands in compensation payouts. 

The friendship however did find one perhaps unlikely defender in semi-retired 3AW radio star Neil Mitchell. 

‘Quick test: upgrade Albo is a bad look,’ Mitchell wrote on X.

‘But does anybody believe he was seriously compromised by having Alan Joyce as a bestie?
Time to rewrite rules governing politicians.’

There is something reassuringly robust about The Punch
Bowl Inn. Not just in the old-fashioned bar, where the Wainwright Gold is
well kept and a huge leather sofa sits before a blazing wood burner;
or in the dining room, solid and comfortable, with its old
beams, well-trodden wooden floors and tables unadorned with cloths; it’s in the menu, too, mainly British
with a Gallic burr, that makes full use of the magnificent
local Lake District larder.

We’re here with Peter Gott, that great Cumbrian hero, and the man behind
Sillfield Farm, who has invited me up to cook at the
Westmorland County Show; also chef Phil Vickery, who certainty knows his alliums; and the
force of nature that is Lorraine Stanton, something of a legend around these parts.
But first dinner, and a sublime twice-baked Mrs Kirkham’s cheese soufflé,
the texture as light as a sigh, the flavour profoundly, lasciviously rich.
Mrs Kirkham’s, now made by her son Graham, is one of the world’s great cheeses, and this is a soufflé of quiet majesty.
A mushroom soup is equally splendid, managing to be both light and gutsy, while Stornoway black pudding with bubble and squeak and a deep-fried egg is pure Cumbrian comfort by way of Lewis.

There’s a fundamental generosity here, matched by assured technical precision. Duck à l’orange sees a
plump breast cooked rare, the skin crisp, the sauce just the right side of
bitter. It comes with a fat potato fondant and cabbage spiked with shards of smoked bacon. I eat rump of
lamb, four vast just-pink slices, drenched in the stickiest, most gloriously intense of gravies; by its side,
a tiny shepherd’s pie, one bite of pure ovine brilliance.

Puddings are every bit as fine: a lemon tart, beautifully
sharp, with damson sorbet (this part of the Lake District is famed for its
damsons); along with a banana soufflé, this time the classic version but ethereal, served with vanilla ice cream and a pot of sticky-toffee sauce to
pour deep into its molten centre. This is good old-fashioned food, immaculately done, in the sort
of pub designed for lingering. It’s getting late now, and we’ve an early start.
But first, another bottle of wine. Dinners like this are too rare to be rushed.

Australians have discovered an unlikely pop-up store offering shoppers ‘incredible’ deals on clothing, homewares, food, and electronics.

The temporary Vinnies locations have been set up around Victoria
to help shoppers get through the cost of living crisis ravaging the country.

Vinnies, or the St Vincent de Paul Society,
is a charity that works to provide support and assistance to people in need.

Most items are brand new stock donated by corporate partners including Christmas decorations.

Popular bargains include $10 large jars of Biscoff, $2 bags of Red Rock
Deli chips, and discounted shoes from Boston Bros. 

Shoppers will find men’s, women’s, and children’s clothing, shoes from top brands, and even electrical goods at the Vinnies pop-up locations. 

Many have purchased vacuums, air fryers, Adidas shoes, printers,
and kitchen knives from previous pop-up shops. 

There is presently a location in Ascot Vale which is open until 3 November, and another in Boronia which will remain open until Christmas –

Australian politicians are almost always opting to fly with Qantas on taxpayer-funded trips,
despite Virgin offering cheaper tickets.

Federal MPs flew with the national carrier for 80
per cent of work trips last year despite it not always being
the cheapest route, according to travel data provided to the government.

While politicians and their staffers are required to book
the cheapest flight, it also has to be the most efficient, with
Qantas offering the most routes between major cities.

MPs are banned from accruing frequent flyer points on taxpayer-funded trips like
ordinary Aussies can, but they can can receive lifetime status credits, which allows access to airport lounges and flight upgrades.

‘How else can one explain the extraordinary dominance of Qantas
in securing bookings by parliamentarians and their staff?’ Myriam Robin wrote in an opinion piece for the Australian Financial Review.

‘There’s nothing like accruing status credits on someone else’s dime.’

Transport Minister Catherine King has since committed to a review of flight bookings by government officials
which will be conducted by the Department of Finance this year, despite there being just two months left of 2024.

Politicians’ preference for Qantas may also be put down to the airline’s exclusive invite-only ‘Chairman’s
Lounge’.

at which victims were plied with alcohol and drugs.

After his arrest in October in Florida with Jeffries, Smith was held in custody in New York.
Smith appeared in court Tuesday in Central Islip on Long Island, to
the east of New York City.

Smith pleaded not guilty and was released on a $10 million bond put up by Jeffries and his family,
said a statement from the US attorney’s office for the eastern district of New York.

An AFP photographer saw Smith leave the courthouse with what
appeared to be a large electronic surveillance bracelet attached to his ankle.

Charging documents detail 15 anonymous victims, but prosecutors suggest the scale was probably much larger and have appealed for witnesses and victims to come forward.

Prosecutors say young men were taken to the New York home of Jeffries and Smith
and to hotels in Britain, France, Italy, Morocco to have sex with them.

Jeffries faces the prospect of life in prison if convicted.

The Food and Drug Administration’s top tobacco scientist has accepted a job at tobacco giant
Philip Morris International, just weeks after he signed off on the company’s latest vape product. 

Matt Holman, chief of the office of science in the agency’s Center for Tobacco Products (CTP),
announced his departure from the FDA on Tuesday, effective immediately, after having served at the agency for more than 20 years. 

His departure adds to ongoing trouble within the FDA’s tobacco control division, which is
currently under review by agency commissioner Robert Califf. 

It also follows the division’s loss of Mitch Zeller, who retired in April after serving as CTP director for nearly a decade. Brian King, who announced Holman’s
resignation in an internal memo, was appointed director earlier this month.

Changes to CTP’s organizational structure come amid FDA efforts to regulate the
vaping market and just weeks after the agency temporarily reversed its
June decision to ban Juul e-cigarettes from being sold in stores. 

Philip Morris, although most known for its production of Marlboro cigarettes, is also a producer of e-cigarettes,
heated tobacco and oral nicotine products.

At CTP, Holman played a key role in e-cigarette approvals, including IQOS, a
‘heat-not-burn’ tobacco device produced by Philip Morris International (PMI).

Although IQOS isn’t currently sold in the US due
to patent issues, it could possibly face new FDA reviews if those issues
were to be resolved.

The product is currently sold in Korea, Japan and other countries,
but the firm hopes to resume sales in the US next year. 

Holman told The New York Times on Wednesday that his role at PMI was ‘broadly defined’
but involved working on tobacco harm-reduction efforts,
noting he was drawn to the agency because of its goal to push smokers from using cigarettes to noncombustible
and less harmful products.

‘They are taking the actions that I think would align with such a goal,’ Holman said.

‘And that’s what really drew my attention to PMI. I’m
going there not to help them sell more cigarettes, but the opposite.’ 

The biochemist said he would also provide input on regulatory submissions. 

A PMI spokesperson, in a statement to DailyMail.com on Thursday,
declined to give specifics about Holman’s role at the firm but said ‘he will abide by all applicable post-government
employment restrictions.’

‘These restrictions prohibit Dr. Holman from appearing before or communicating with the
FDA on behalf of PMI regarding any matter for a period of
one year.

‘In addition, Dr. Holman is prohibited for a period of two years from appearing before or communicating with
the FDA on behalf of PMI regarding any matter that
was pending under his official responsibility during his last year of government service.

‘Finally, Dr. Holman is permanently prohibited from appearing before or communicating with the FDA on behalf
of PMI regarding any particular matter in which he was personally and substantially involved
during the entirety of his government service.’

Holman’s departure comes just weeks after the federal regulator temporarily
reversed its June decision to ban Juul e-cigarettes from being sold in stores.

Further details about his appointment will be disclosed
at a later date, but the spokesperson reiterated the company is ‘looking forward’ to
Holman joining their team ‘as we continue to pursue a smoke-free future.’

Holman was earning more than $230,000 annually while
working at CTP, according to 2020 income reports reviewed by
FederalPay.org.

CTP director King’s Tuesday memo – which was
made public by Stat News Correspondent Nicholas Florko – revealed Holman had been on leave prior to his
resignation.

King said the former chief ‘recused himself, consistent with agency ethics
policies, from all CTP/FDA work while exploring career opportunities outside of government.’

He also applauded Holman for helping CTP through a ‘critical time,’ which included
‘including preparing for and overseeing review for
the bolus of premarket tobacco product applications.’

He said that although he and Holman ‘didn’t have an opportunity
to work together,’ he was ‘grateful’ for his contributions to the agency and ‘wishes him well in his next chapter.’

It is unclear what Zeller made as CTP director, as his income documents
have been redacted. However, Glassdoor reports the average FDA division direct salary is $200,891. Based
on Holman’s salary, DailyMail.com analysts speculate Zeller was earning over $230,000
annually.

His departure was announced by CTP Director Brian King
in a memo on Tuesday, which has since been made public by Stat News Correspondent Nicholas Florko

Critics argue Holman’s recent career change is concerning due
to the ‘revolving door’ between federal officials and corporations they regulate.

However, federal rules governing career changes do
not prohibit an official who oversees regulatory matters from leaving the agency and
then joining corporations with products under review. 

Rules do restrict Holman – or any other former FDA employee – from appearing before the agency about issues he ‘participated
personally and substantially during government service.’ 

‘This is legal. That’s the bottom line,’ Dr. Michael Carome,
director of the Public Citizen health research group, told the Times. ‘It’s this type of revolving door
move that really undermines public confidence in the
agency.’ 

Critics argue Holman’s career change is concerning due to the
‘revolving door’ between federal officials and corporations they regulate.

Those skeptical of the move are also questioning the recent approval of the Philip Morris smokeless tobacco product which is an electronic device that, unlike e-cigarettes,
contains tobacco.

Dr. Stanton Glantz, a retired professor of medicine,
argued the agency’s approval of IQOS ‘disregarded valid scientific evidence and misapplied the public health standard
mandated by law.’

He claims Holman ignored a major study showing that e-cigarette use was not associated with reduced
smoking rates and that approving vapes is not combating the problem of dual-use of cigarettes and e-cigarettes.

‘He’s the one who signed off on these approvals,
‘ he said. ‘They deal with all of these issues by ignoring it, by
relying on out-of-date studies.’

Earlier this month, the FDA temporarily restored the sale
of Juul e-cigarettes after reviewing the company’s appeal of a decision to pull the products from the market.

The FDA chose to reject the company’s application to remain on store shelves in late
June as part of a larger crackdown on teen smoking and the tobacco industry overall.

While many other major e-cigarette manufacturers were allowed
to remain on shelves, Juul was instead rejected.

The San Francisco, California, company appealed the decision.

On July 5, America’s top regulator agency cited ‘scientific issues’ as a reason to stay the ban and allow the products to temporarily return. 

‘This administrative stay temporarily suspends the marketing denial order during the additional
review but does not rescind it,’ the agency wrote in a tweet.

‘All electronic nicotine delivery systems, or ENDS products, including those made by JUUL, are required by law
to have FDA authorization to be legally marketed. The stay and the agency’s review does not constitute authorization to market, sell,
or ship JUUL products.’ 

Juul rocketed to popularity in the U.S. in the 2010s, as its fruit flavored nicotine products
became trendy among younger smokers – leading to the company also shouldering blame for increases in teen smoking.

To limit rises in teen smoking, the FDA banned fruit flavored
e-cigarette devices, and forced each company to apply individually to allow their products to remain on shelves.

Juul was expected to have its application approved.

Juul has branded its products as devices that can help those addicted
to nicotine slowly ween themselves off safely – as
vape devices do not have many of the same downsides
as smoking tobacco cigarettes do.

Instead, though, the fruity and mint flavors in many of its devices have led to many children and
teens picking up smoking – when they likely would not have otherwise.

This has placed Juul, and the e-cigarette market in general,
in the FDA’s crosshairs in recent years.
